Metabolic syndrome is a clinical condition characterized by the clustering of multiple cardiovascular risk factors and predisposing people to type 2 diabetes and its macrovascular complications. Although various diagnostic criteria have been proposed so far, none of those criteria have successfully provided great positive predictive value for cardiovascular diseases, indicating that its diagnosis is of limited clinical importance for macrovascular risk stratification in diabetic patients. Nevertheless, metabolic syndrome remains to be an important clinical entity for overcoming the diabetic macrovascular complications, because it provides basis not only for the incidence of type 2 diabetes but also for rational and comprehensive management of multiple cardiovascular risks in diabetic patients.
